Edwin was established in Japan 1947 by K. Tsunemi whose unparalleled enthusiasm for denim inspired him to import denim directly from the United States initially with no denim being manufactured in Japan at that time. This meant that it was usually worn-out, dirty and used which then had to be repaired by hand before selling on to the consumer.
A few years later in 1951 domestically manufactured denim was available for the first time, although the product was of inferior quality and conversely even more expensive than the American equivalent. This drove Mr Tsumeni to begin to create his own denims. These denims had a much greater sophistication in fits, authentic washes and superior quality. From this point on in Edwin denim history, quality, craftsmanship, innovation and integrity have been paramount to the brand.
A decade later in 1961, the first pair of Edwin jeans were designed and created starting the production line of what was to become one of the most innovative and pioneering denim/clothing companies in the world. Fitting for a brand that breathes, eats, drinks and lives denim, they got their name from a partial anagram of the word DENIM inverting the 'M' to a 'W' to create 'EDWIN'. Just two years later they were already innovating and pushing the boundaries of the denim industry by producing the world heaviest ringspun denim jean at 16oz. These featuring the famous three-colour rainbow selvedage, which is still being used on many of the different styles today.

In the 1970's Edwin were the first company in the world to develop the 'old wash' technique. The purpose of this technique was to replicate the wear and tear and the rigors of everyday hard labour and the different effects this would have on raw denim over time. In the following decade Edwins forward thinking approach was again apparent with the invention of 'stone washing' which has influenced every denim company around the world today and revolutionised the denim industry.
In the 1990's Edwin then created the 'new vintage' concept. With this they could re-create the subtle vintage washes from their achieve references by hand replicating each wash with meticulous detail and masterful craft. Edwin is an authentic denim brand priding itself on innovation and craftsmanship, utilising exclusive fabrics and fabrication, unique technology, hand wash processes, and their progression and quest to continually be the vanguard in design, production and fit.
