Back in 1988, Hidehiko Yamane, a tailor, jeans enthusiast and avid denim collector from Japan was insipred to produce his own brand of premium denim after finding a rare pair of vintage jeans. He then set out to replicate the American classic 1944-style jean with an almost obsessive attention to detail and strongly influenced by 1950's Americana. Yamane used his experience in the vintage clothing import business and poured it into his love of denim and began collecting the elements required to produce the vintage inspired jeans he wanted to create. This involved gathering machinery that had not been produced for over 40 years. The initial production allowed just 14 pairs to be made a day but each one had a hand-painted seagull, now a signature of the brand, put on by Yamane himself. The name Evisu is derived from the Japanese god of fisherman, luck and workingmen(Ebisu). He is one of the Seven Gods of Fortune and is usually portrayed with a fish and a fishing rod. This symbol also remains on Evisu clothing to this day.
Although Evisu was originally more a labour of love than a venture for commercial purposes, Evisu jeans captured the imagination of the detail-obsessed Japanese fashion public, starting a renewed interest in vintage denim, which has now spread worldwide. Evisu pioneers many unique approaches to denim. They have styles and washes which are interesting and unique in their quest for innovation and indivuduality in the denim market.

In the early 1990's Yamane introduced a tailoring line, closely followed by fishing and golf lines. In 1999, he introduced a ladies fashion line called Evisu Donna. With well over 60 specialist shops in Japan and different clothing lines, Evisu's growth from a vintage denim label to rounded fashion label was apparent. But the brands roots and heritage was and still is in producing top quality Japanese denim. They have lines such has the Deluxe and Heritage line which are exclusively made using Japanese denim and are produced on vintage shuttle looms, thus manufacturing jeans in an identical fashion to the way denim was produced in the 1950's.
Not officially launched and founded until 1991, this year marks Evisu's official 20th anniversary. Since the brand's inception, Evisu has continually innovated and created its own definitive place in the denim business. Despite the brands exponential growth, not only in their native Japan but worldwide, they still remain true to their original roots from a denim afficiando. Keeping up a devotion to quality and authenticity and also staying true to Yamane's creativity, Evisu continues to blend this humour and production values.
Inspired by Japan today, this Japanese label embraces its local culture and is influenced by the richness and diversity present in the country. Drawing on the history and heritage of Japan they produce a timeless range. The country is an eclectic mix of opposites and contradictions, embracing both the old and the new creating a unique feeling and culture.
Evisu's popularity is still going strong, with pop-culture references and mentions in many rap and R&B songs including Jay-Z's ''Show You How''and they are also referenced by Lil' Wayne.
