Lee 101 T-Shirts

Founded in 1889 by Henry David Lee, a resident of the Kansas town Salina, the HD Lee Merc. Company initially specialised in producing and selling fine foods. It wasn't until some time later that Lee started to produce the garments for which they are world renowned today. At a loose end with the poor quality of the workwear available to him from other suppliers, Lee started to produce his own range of high quality denim workwear and the Bib Overall was created. This initial style is still influential today with it being referenced in many contemporary styles and with dungarees still a popular choice in workwear.

Two years later in 1913, Lee continued this innovation in workwear by creating the one piece overall. Perfect for manual labour, the garment quickly became an essential and obvious choice for many in the workplace including mechanics, farmers and railway workers and the overall was distributed all over the United States. Indeed this design was so practical and durable that it is still used in workwear today. In 1921, this knack of producing high quality, practical workwear continued as the brands reputation was growing. Perhaps a landmark year in the Lee® history was in 1924 when they designed and produced a pair of tough and unique jeans the Lee® Riders. They were designed with cowboys, ranch hands and rodeo hands the aimed market and as such had many features and minor details important to improve the durability and practicality of the jean. Details like wide rear pockets for comfortable riding and a weight of denim 3oz above anything on the market at the time meant that the Lee® Riders were perfect for the intended purpose but in additon this durability and unique style eventually led to them becoming popular in other circles.

In 1926 Lee® was the first clothing company to use zip fastening flys and closures. This continued innovation by the brand in workwear apparel was helping to establish the brand as a leader in practical, top quality clothing. Just a few years later in 1931 they invented the Slim Jacket - 101J which was the first shorter style western jacket designed for cowboys. The jacket featured slanted breast pockets which made it easier to reach inside the pockets while on horseback and the wide waistband ensured the jacket didn't fold upward. Again, this style of denim jacket is mimicked across todays fashion scene and is remains ever popular. Shortly after the introduction of the Slim Jacket they produced a winter version of the jacket style in the Storm Rider Jacket. This design had Alaskan blanket lining and featured a cord collar. This look is now iconic and is synonymous with the Lee® brand.

Just over 60 years ago Lee® launched a jeans range for women with Lady Lee Riders with the brand expanding its range into new markets. Then in the 50's the transformation of denim to pop-culture combined with icons Marlon Brando in The Wild One and James Dean in East of Eden both wearing Lee® Jeans helped propel the brand forward into the modern market. Combine this with the quality of the garments and the design and it is easy to see why they are still the choice for many today.

In 1959 Lee® introduced the Lee® Westerner or Lee® Whites which was a new concept in western style offering a dressed up style and version of denim. They were marketed as "Rugged, Comfortable, Dressy cowboy pants and jackets." Five years later Lee® then produced the famous Lee® Prest - a trouser with a permanent crease along the front of the leg. Without the need to iron and marketed as 'dirt-resistant' these slacks quickly became a preferred choice of clothing during the 60's and beyond.

This high quality of apparel and constant innovation in techniques and design has kept the Lee® brand at the forefront of the designer denim world. Today they are more popular than ever with many people recognizing the quality, with Lee® appealing to the creative mind with artists, musicians and writers all wearing this iconic denim brand which allows the wearer to express their individuality.

For its Spring/Summer '11 collection, Lee takes inspiration from a pivitol decade of the last century and goes back to the 1950's - when ‘matching colour shirts and pants were the uniform for work and play.’ In addition to being influenced by the feel and culture of the decade, Lee went back through it's own archives of styles to source the shapes and colours that inspired the collection.

The full range comprises of classic jeans and shirts cut from modern, luxury fabrics - the classic 101 Short Loco jacket is updated in Japanese Selvedge. The shirts in the collection are produced in the finest selvedge chambray. There are also 1950s-style all over prints, checks, chinos in a bold and vibrant colour palette of whites, blues, reds and greens. The result is a highly desirable reworking of classic Americana style.
