Penfield was created in Hudson, Massachusetts by Harvey Gross in 1975. Although Mr. Gross has since retired the brand have stayed true to their core values and have been consistant in their quality and approach, with some designs in production today remaining relatively unchanged since 1975. Over the years Penfield have built a reputation for making the highest quality down-filled jackets, fleece and outerwear; drawing upon their 35 years of experience and their genuine love and passion for the great outdoors.

Since their formation Penfield have had a number of collaborations with streetwear labels such has Maharashi, Stussy and Wood Wood; thereby expanding their knowledge and spread from outerwear to producing streetwear of the same high quality to be expected of Penfield. Recent collaborative efforts with Rag and Bone and Gitman Bros. have continued this trend of working with high end innovators in their respective fields to produce garments which are contemporary, stylish and practical. read more

Despite this unquestionable versatility, Penfield's heart will always be in the outdoors. Evident in their slogan 'For Life in the Open' and in their iconic bear logo with the bear being a symbol associated with the great outdoors while also representing Penfields heritage and their love for the environment. In addition to this Penfield has now supported an organisation called WSPA(World Society for the Protection of Animals) which helps protect and recsue bears* around the world. (*indeed all animals, neither Penfield nor the WSPA are speciesist.)

Providing warmth and comfort in a variety of weather conditions, Penfield have consistantly set new standards within the outdoor industry. Using a range of premium fabrics and production methods like the 80/20 goose down (80% down, 20% feather) which is ultra lightweight. Naturally breathable Teflon™ and DWR coated down-proof jackets and outerwear are lightweight and functional yet are extremely strong and waterproof demonstrating their obvious appeal to outdoor entusiasts. Their Teflon™ and DWR coated Ripstop fabrics are engineered to be durable but lightweight and comfortable at the same time. Penfield is always striving to stay at the forefront of outerwear fashion, working constantly to develop new fabrics, improve on existing ones or to find fresh innovations in production.

This drive for innovation is shown in one of the brands three labels, Black Bear. Signifying the premium series of the Penfield collection, this label emphasises contemporary design with a mix of technical and premium fabrics. Another label in the Penfield collection is Trailwear. Created in the 70's Trailwear was to symbolize the heritage and quality of the early years and of what Penfield still stands for. The collection is everyday wear, a range which is representative of the style and versatility in outerwear Penfield has become famous for. The third label is the Penfield Classic collection which has been relied upon for performance, quality and practicality since 1975.
